How to find a new hair stylist or barber

Finding a hair stylist or barber that you can trust is much more difficult than you think it’s going to be.

Putting your hair in the hands of someone else is, admittedly, one of the most terrifying things; you don’t want to give just anyone permission to put those scissors or that razor to your hair.

This is especially true if you are living in a new city. You left your stylist back home, and are scared to venture out with a new stylist or barber unprepared.

Truth be told, I struggled with this when I moved to L.A. and left my trusted stylist back in Montana. The thought of trying to find a stylist in Los Angeles where it seems like there are an infinite number of them was nothing short of incredibly overwhelming. I had no idea where to even begin my search for a person that could style my hair as I wanted without sending me home in tears.

Should I just go to the salon in my neighborhood? Should I find someone whose hair I like and ask them where they got it done? Should I turn to Yelp for reviews?

I became flooded with options, and thus confusion as to what I should do.

So, I simply decided to cut it myself… with a pair of dull scissors.
While it was simply a trim that I somehow managed to not completely botch, I do not recommend taking the route of cutting your own hair with scissors that were intended for toddlers to cut construction paper with.

Thankfully, finding a hair stylist or barber to cut your hair doesn’t have to be the struggle that it was for me. There are much more simple and efficient ways to get your hair done right.

Imagine how wonderful you will feel when you have finally found the answer to your question of “what is the best salon near me?”

Here are the top ways for you to find the best salon or barbershop near you.

1. Ask your friends

One of the best ways to find your new rockstar hair stylist or barber is via word of mouth. Next time your friends get his or her hair done and it looks fab, ask them where the magic happened.

If you spot a look you are really digging and it happens to be on a stranger, no worries -- simply ask them where they got their hair done, and chances are they would be happy to share.

Your friend or stranger may get bonus points for referring you, so be sure to give your new stylist their name. This will also help the stylist to get a better understanding of the look that you are going for.

However, the issue with asking your friends is that your hair type may be different and the stylist that perfected their look may not be able to do the same for you.

Also, the chances of getting a cut with that specific stylist can be pretty slim here in L.A., so you may be stuck with a different stylist at the salon that may not have the same skills.

2. Peruse social media

Thanks to Instagram, seeing the work of a barber or stylist has become incredibly easy. You can search stylists in your area and see their work to determine if it aligns with what you’re looking for.

If you have a specific style you’re going for, you can always search the hashtags to find something similar.

The issue with this, unfortunately is that what you see on Instagram isn’t always reality, and it’s possible the look you love can’t be created the same way on you that it was on someone else.

In addition, the reviews you see on social media and Yelp do not take into account your hair profile, so what you see may not be what you get.

3. Use the Klipped app

In order to save yourself a great deal of time, effort, and potential heartbreak over a haircut gone wrong, I suggest you check out Klipped.

From the moment you download this app, you will feel the stress over finding your new hairstylist disappear.
